Cartons can generally be divided into two types: hand-assembled cartons and machine-grade cartons. Many standard cartons available on the market are not suitable for use with automatic case erectors. Machine-grade cartons must meet specific requirements:
- The board stiffness must be moderate—cartons that are too soft will not perform well in a case erector.
- Creases (score lines) must be deep—ideally at least one-third the thickness of the board—to ensure clean, reliable folding during high-speed operation.
- Cutouts at the corners of the flaps are essential. Hand-assembled cartons typically lack these cuts, but machine-grade cartons must include them; otherwise, the case erector cannot open the box properly.
- The carton must be precisely manufactured to ensure consistent, square formation after erection.
Therefore, after purchasing an automatic case erector, it’s critical to confirm with your carton supplier that you are ordering machine-grade cartons specifically designed for automated equipment. Only then can you ensure smooth, trouble-free operation.

- Side flaps should be shortened by 3 mm to prevent curling during case sealing.
- Front and rear flaps (width-wise panels) must have chamfered corners as shown in the diagram.
- No overlap should occur when side flaps are folded; maintain a 2–3 mm gap between them.
- Score lines must be deeply creased—to approximately two-thirds of the board thickness—for easy and consistent folding.
- Preferably use BE5-layer corrugated board with clean, smooth cut edges—free of burrs or fraying.
- Precision in manufacturing is essential: the erected carton must be perfectly rectangular (not a parallelogram), and staple or glue points must be accurately positioned.
